On Tuesday, August 10th, the parish of Abrã celebrated the 400th anniversary of its creation.
The date was marked in a ceremony with the unveiling of a commemorative stone and the launch of a small book with a historical overview of this parish, created in 1621.
The ceremony was presided over by Rui Ferreira, President of the Parish Council of Abrã, with the presence of Inês Barroso and Cristina Casanova, representing Santarém’s City Council, among other personalities. Also associated with the event were the Bishop D. José Traquina, Father António Pereira and dozens of people.
Birthplace of the founder of J.J. Louro, Joaquim José Louro Pereira, and the place chosen to establish his first company, more than 40 years ago, Abrã has a special meaning for the J.J. Louro Group. A large part of the Group’s employees are also from Abrã.
The parish, in the north of the municipality of Santarém, comprises the places of Abrã, Amiais de Cima, Canal, Cortiça and Coutada de Cima.
Once called Abraã, it is thought that the name has its origins in the Arabic word âbara, which means entrance or mouth, way and port.
The parish belonged to the municipality of Alcanede until 24th October 1855, the year in which it was extinct, becoming part of the municipality of Santarém.
